What was the initial idea behind the story?
Louis.
Louis, hahaha.
How did it actually come about?
Well, the two of them made a film called "Who am I".
And three years ago we were also here at the TIFF and then Netflix saw this film and liked it very much and asked the two of them that they could maybe make a series out of it, but because the two of them didn't want to repeat themselves, they just said: "No, we don't want to do that, but we have a few other things that we could pitch to you."
We pitched there, among other things, and Netflix thought that was great and... But then "Dark" is, just now... has a three-year process of... developments that it had to go through because it was something completely different at the beginning as when it finally...
That's a bit misrepresented.

How it was?
So that we actually had "Dark" in our drawer for a long time.
Well, the idea is actually about 7.8 years old and was originally planned as a cinema film, and then in these eight years it went in very different directions, paths followed, and...
Then we had another idea in the drawer and eventually we combined those two ideas and that's what... what "Dark" is now.
Exactly.
What I think is very well done is the color of the time.
What is important so that this is not set up when you want to combine three time zones?
Hmmm....
Well, on the one hand, I believe that one is actually not that pseudologic.
Well, that sounds a bit flat now, but... it was important to us that the three time levels only differ relatively in terms of costume and equipment, for example, and because...
You always have this idea about World War II that everything was black and white, but it wasn't.
It was colorful, too, but everyone was dressed in weird costumes, so to speak, and that's how we wanted to approach everything.
We deliberately said that everything should feel like one world, only that certain details change, like hairstyles, or costumes, or cars.
And that was kind of the way we approached it.
I also like the picture of Germany.
How much is there in the series?
What was important to you to show?
Yes and so is...
It's two or three seasons: 2019, we don't yet know exactly what Germany will look like, but '86 and '53, which are very exciting for German history, and '86, we have now experienced ourselves, '53 not.
But I think it's just very interesting to see what it was like in Germany in the post-war period and what it was like in Germany in the eighties, where it was really booming and... we were already talking about Chernobyl in forums, which had a huge impact on us in the eighties and such.
So, there's a lot of our own history in there too.
We both grew up in a small town and just told the 80s the way we saw them.
It's not that easy.
The story is a bit challenging.
How do you determine what the viewer understands?
What he can absorb.
Well, basically we are our own test subjects.
So we...
You have to take someone as a reference, and it's especially when you're doing something that's maybe a bit more genre-oriented.
It's also clear that you can't take everyone with you and you then decide a bit based on your own viewing behavior.
Ok, how much mystery do I actually like to see, how many questions do I want to be asked, how complex can the whole thing get?
And then you get enough feedback from other people, whether you're completely lost or not, and...
But of course, it's a fine line to find that balance between... how easy do you make it for the viewer or how complicated do you make it?
Louis, what was your first reaction when you read the script?
Well, I was already familiar with this pitch from the press release and even then I really wanted to act.
Because I've just read it, I thought it's about a lot of families there, there.
There has to be a son or some boy that I can embody.
And when I finally got the confirmation, I got the first book.
Nope, the first four books, and I started reading the first book sometime around 11 pm or so and thought to myself okay I'll read the episode now and then tomorrow, tomorrow we'll continue.
But then I just read through all the first four in one go because I couldn't stop and it was so captivating while reading and...
That was exactly what Jantje and Bo also talk about a lot, what this, this world that was shown to me, which I immediately slipped into, which is somehow more extreme in a series than in a film because of course, it is too is a larger span of time that is being told about... about this world...
And I... Well, I got pretty blown away.

What is it about you that you...
Why this?
Yes, my father has something to do with it.
He works in the field and accordingly it was always a bit of an issue in my childhood and youth, because many are against nuclear energy, for example, and my father then always tried to sell me on this opposite and...
I've always found it very fascinating because it's the cleanest source of energy you can use, but also the most dangerous at the same time.
And I find this combination incredibly interesting because, as I said, just this contrast that there, that on the one hand, to put it somehow, such a small fuel rod can release so much energy and at the same time can detonate like an atomic bomb.
And of course, you can't tell what it has to do with it in the series, because that would be too many spoilers, but actually from the beginning...
...know so clearly that we absolutely wanted to enrich this world with it.
Were there any role models for "Dark" in this regard or in other regardss, apart from your own work?
Well, we... "Twin Peaks" had a huge impact on us back then.
It's definitely a big influence.
But also Stephen King's stories, which often deal with small towns and young people and their problems and then encounter something supernatural, which is symbolic of something, I believe also have a great influence on us.
What's another big impact?
That was a lot.
So yes... "Memories of Murder" just as a promotion for a really great Korean film, for example, has been a huge influence on us for years.
Well, we just like these small-town stories, and there's something really dark and evil behind the doors.
That simply fascinates us because, as I said, we come from a small town and we always had the feeling that something creepy was happening behind the doors.
And that's just not as idyllic as you always think that a small town is.
How is working with Netflix different than working with the film, maybe for actors?
So for an actor, I don't think it's a big difference.
Because my work is limited, I think, to working with Bo and the other actors, and I haven't really been involved with Netflix that much.
So now I find it very comfortable, in hindsight, but... but during, during filming... yes, the focus was on working with Bo.
So, from a filmmaker's point of view, a series maker's point of view?
Yes, it's quite a privilege and a nice playground to be able to work there, because they're very creative, so creatively friendly.
They basically decide on a project and on the creative people who push it through and give them a lot of freedom to do it the way they would like to do it.
And you don't get that often and it has a lot to do with trust.
So you get a lot of trust and of course a lot of pressure because of that, because you want to live up to that trust, don't want to screw us up and...
So we actually found it, I can speak for both of us, a very nice collaboration.
May I ask, what are your favorite series privately?
Violence...
What do you like to watch?
Well, definitely for me... I still think "Making of a Murderer" was great, terrific.
"Fargo" the second season.
Yes, I honestly still think "Sopranos" is the best-written series ever written.
We also really liked "The Wire".
We all watched Game of Thrones too.
We do not know why.
Hahaha.
Not me.

But it's also kind of weird that you like it, but...
You just watched Friends from College...
And somehow I found "Glow" really great.
I also thought "Glow" was great, yes.
I have to say I've become a "Stranger Things" fan too.
I thought the "UA" was great.
"Bojack Horseman" is an animated series, but I love that too... I just love that.
So it really is a grandiose mixture of comedy and tragedy.
And "Westworld" was the last one I watched.
This is also a crazy world that is shown there and that you dive into.

Ich habe die ersten 2 Episoden gesehen, hat mir gut gefallen.
Was war die initial Idee hinter der Story?
Louis.
Louis, hahaha.
Wie ist es eigentlich dazu gekommen?
Na ja, also die beiden haben einen Film gemacht, der hieß "Who am I".
Und vor drei Jahren waren eben auch auf dem TIFF hier und dann hat Netflix diesen Film gesehen und mochte ihn sehr gerne und hat die beiden darauf angesprochen, dass sie vielleicht eine Serie draus machen könnten, und weil die beiden sich aber nicht wiederholen wollen, haben sie dann eben gesagt: "Nee, das wollen wir nicht machen, aber wir haben eben ein paar andere Stoffe, die wir euch pitchen könnten."
Haben unter anderem da gepitcht und das fand Netflix sehr toll und... "Dark" ist aber dann, eben hat noch... hat einen dreijahres Prozess von... von Entwicklungen dass es durchlaufen musste, weil es am Anfang etwas ganz anderes war, als es dann letztendlich...
Das ist doch ein bisschen vertreten.
Ah Mist!
Entschuldigung, wir haben jetzt Louis antworten lassen, weil wir die Frage schon öfter beantwortet haben.
Wie es war?
So dass wir eigentlich "Dark" schon ganz lange in der Drawer hatten.
Also, die Idee ist eigentlich schon so 7,8 Jahre alt ungefähr, und war originally mal als Kinofilm geplant und hat dann in diesen acht Jahren sehr unterschiedliche Richtungen, Wege ist es gegangen, und...
Dann hatten wir noch eine andere Idee in der Drawer und irgendwann haben wir diese beiden Ideen miteinander kombiniert, und das ist jetzt was... was "Dark" jetzt ist.
Genau.
Was sehr schön gelungen ist, finde ich, ist der Zeitkolorit.
Was ist da wichtig, damit das nicht aufgesetzt wird, wenn man drei Zeitzonen unite wird?
Hmmm....
Na ja, einerseits glaube ich, dass man tatsächlich nicht so Pseudologik ist.
Also das klingt jetzt bisschen platt, aber... uns war mal wichtig, dass die drei Zeitebenen relativ sich nur im Kostüm und Ausstattung unterscheiden, zum Beispiel und weil...
Man hat immer vom Zweiten Weltkrieg so eine Vorstellung, dass da alles schwarz-weiß war, aber war es ja nicht.
Es war ja auch bunt, nur alle hatten halt so komische Kostüme an quasi, und so wollten wir das auch alles angehen.
Wir haben bewusst gesagt, das soll sich alles wie eine Welt anfühlen, nur dass sich so gewisse Details ändern, wie Frisuren eben, oder Kostüme oder Autos.
Und das war so ein bisschen eigentlich die Herangehensweise, wie wir das gemacht haben.
Schön finde ich auch das Bild von Deutschland.
Wie viel steckt da drin in der Serie?
Was war euch wichtig zu zeigen?
Ja und also ist...
Es sind ja zwei oder drei Jahreszeiten: 2019, wissen wir noch nicht ganz genau wie Deutschland aussehen wird, aber '86 und '53, die sehr spannend sind für die deutsche Geschichte und '86, haben wir jetzt auch selber noch witnessed '53 nicht.
Aber ich glaube, das ist einfach sehr interessantes zu sehen wie war denn eigentlich in Deutschland in der Nachkriegszeit und wie war den Deutschland in den achtzigern, wo es wirklich so boomte und... in Foren auch schon über Tschernobyl gesprochen, was uns insane geprägt hat in den achtzigern und so.
Also, da ist viel von unserer eigenen Geschichte auch drinnen.
Wir beide, in der Kleinstadt groß geworden und haben halt die 80er so erzählt, wie wir sie gesehen haben.
Es ist ja gar nicht so einfach.
Die Geschichte schon bisschen anspruchsvoll.
Wie legt man fest, was der Zuschauer versteht?
Was er aufnehmen kann.
Also, im Prinzip sind wir unsere eigenen Testpersonen.
Also wir...
Man muss ja irgendjemand als Referenz nehmen und es ist auch gerade wenn man was macht, was so vielleicht ein bisschen genreiger ist.
Auch klar, dass man nicht alle mitnehmen kann und man entscheidet dann ein bisschen nach dem eigenen Sehverhalten.
Ok, wie viel Mistery mag ich denn eigentlich sehen, wie viele Fragen möchte ich gestellt bekommen, wie komplex darf das Ganze werden?
Und dann kriegt man ja genug Feedback auch noch von anderen Leuten, ob man sich da komplett verrennt oder nicht und...
Aber es ist näturlich ein narrower Grat, also diese Balance zu finden aus... wie einfach macht man es dem Zuschauer oder eben auch wie kompliziert macht man es?
Louis, was war deine erste Reaktion als du das Drehbuch gelesen hast?
Also ich kannte diesen Pitch eben schon voll aus der Pressemeldung und wollte schon damals unbedingt mitspielen.
Weil ich habe es eben gelesen, dachte mir, es geht um viele Familien da, da.
Muss es doch irgendwie einen Sohn geben oder irgendeinen Jungen, den ich denn verkörpern kann.
Und als ich endlich die Zusage hatte, habe ich das erste Buch bekommen.
Nee, die ersten vier Bücher und hab' das erste Buch angefangen zu lesen irgendwann um 11 Uhr abends oder so, und dachte mir, okay ich lese jetzt einmal die Folge und dann morgen, morgen geht's weiter.
Dann habe ich aber in einem Rutsch eben die ersten vier alle durchgelesen, weil ich nicht aufhören konnte und es beim Lesen schon so fesselnd war und...
Das war eben diese wovon Jantje und Bo auch ganz viel reden, was diese, diese Welt, die mir so eröffnet wurde gezeigt, die ich sofort hinein geschlüpft bin, was eben bei einer Serie nochmal irgendwie extremer ist als bei einem Film weil es natürlich auch eine größere Zeitspanne ist, über die... über diese Welt erzählt wird....
Und ich... Also ich wurde ziemlich vom Hocker gehauen.

Atom hattet ihr ja schon angesprochen, dass das... ja natürlich dass auch selber erlebt habt.
Das ist so ein Thema, was immer wieder hochkochen kann.
Was hat euch daran, dass ihr...
Warum das?
Ja, mein Vater hat so ein bisschen was damit zu tun.
Der arbeitet in dem Bereich und accordingly war das in meiner Kindheit und Jugend immer so ein bisschen Thema, weil viele gegen Atomenergie zum Beispiel sind so, und mein Vater dann immer auf dieses Gegenteil mir versucht hat zu verkaufen und...
Ich fand' es schon immer sehr faszinierend, weil es ist die sauberste Energiequelle, die man benutzen kann, und aber auch die gefährlichste gleichzeitig.
Und diese Kombination finde ich einfach insane interessant, weil wie gesagt, also einfach dieser Kontrast dass da, dass einerseits irgendwie gesagt, so ein kleiner Brennstab soviel Energie freisetzen kann und gleichzeitig aber auch wie eine Atombombe hochgehen kann.
Und was es dann alles in der Serie als damit zu tun hat, das kann man natürlich nicht verraten, weil das werden dann zu viele Spoilers aber, und zwar das eigentlich von Anfang an...
...wissen, so klar, dass wir diese Welt unbedignt damit bereichern wollten.
Gab es in der respect oder auch in anderen respect Vorbilder für "Dark", abgesehen außerhalb eures eigenen Schaffens?
Also, wir... "Twin Peaks" hat uns insane geprägt damals.
Das ist sicher ein großer Einfluss.
Aber auch Stephen King Geschichten, die auch oft mit so Kleinstädten und Jugendlichen und ihren Problemen und dann auf etwas Übernatürliches treffen, was symbolisch für etwas steht, ist, glaube ich, auch ein großer Einfluss bei uns.
Was ist noch ein großer Einfluss?
Das war doch schon eine Menge.
So ja... "Memories of Murder" nur so als Werbung für einen ganz tollen koreanischen Film ist, zum Beispiel, ein großer Einfluss für uns seit Jahren.
Also, wir mögen einfach diese kleinstädtische Geschichten, und dass da hinter den Türen, was ganz Düsteres und Böses liegt.
Das fasziniert uns einfach, weil wie gesagt, wir kommen aus einer Kleinstadt, hatten immer das Gefühl, dass hinter den Türen, irgendwie was Gruseliges passiert.
Und das eben nicht so idyllisch ist, wie man immer denkt, dass eine Kleinstadt ist.
Wie ist die Zusammenarbeit mit Netflix anders als mit dem Film auch für Schauspieler vielleicht?
Also für einen Schauspieler ist es, glaube ich, kein großer Unterschied.
Weil meine Arbeit ist, glaube ich limitiert auf die Arbeit mit Bo und den anderen Schauspielern und ich habe nicht wirklich viel mit Netflix zu tun gehabt.
Also jetzt empfinde ich es als sehr angenehm, im Nachhinein, aber... aber während, während des Drehens... ja war der Fokus auf der Arbeit mit Bo.
So, aus Filmemachersicht, Serienmachersicht?
Ja, also das ist ein ziemliches Privileg und ein schöner Spielplatz, indem man da arbeiten darf, weil die sehr kreativ, also kreativ freundlich sind.
Die entscheiden sich quasi für ein Projekt und für die Kreativen, die das durchsetzen und geben denen sehr viel Freiheit, das eben auch so zu machen, wie sie das gerne machen wollen würden.
Und das hat man nicht oft und es hat sehr viel mit Vertrauen zu tun.
Also man kriegt eine Menge Vertrauen und natürlich dann dadurch auch eine Menge Druck, weil man diesen Vertrauen ja auch gerecht werden möchte, uns nicht versieben will und...
Also wir fanden das tatsächlich also, ich darf für uns Beide sprechen, eine sehr schöne Zusammenarbeit.
Darf ich fragen, was sind privat eure Lieblingsserien?

Was schaut ihr gerne?
Also bei mir definitiv... Ich fand "Making of a Murderer" immer noch super, grandios.
