The French subjunctive is a mood used to express uncertainty, doubt, wish, fear, judgment, as well as necessity, obligation, opposition, possibility.

It is widely used in French, and usually appears after the word que (or sometimes qui).

It is, for example, used after

il faut que, bien que, avant que, afin que, à moins que.

For example :

Il faut que tu apprennes ta leçon. Il faut que tu apprennes ta leçon.

All regular -er, -ir and many irregular verbs follow the same conjugation pattern :

The subjunctive is formed of the stem of the verb in the third person plural, that is ils or elles, in the indicative present tense.

And the following endings : -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ient.

For example :

Finir = To finish.

(Ils/ Elles finissent).

It's the form of the present tense and therefore the stem for the subjonctif présent.

Il faut que je finisse, il faut que tu finisses, il faut qu'il/ qu'elle/ qu'on finisse, il faut que nous finissions, il faut que vous finissiez, il faut qu'ils/ qu'elles finissent.

However, some irregular verbs do not follow the same pattern or may require a change of spelling.

Example with the verb aller :

il faut que j'aille

Example with the verb faire :

il faut que je fasse

Exemple with the verb savoir :

il faut que je sache

Bien qu'il fasse beau, les enfants n'ont pas envie de sortir. Bien qu'il fasse beau, les enfants n'ont pas envie de sortir. Répétez.
