So let's do that today.
First of all, of course, there is the temperature.
Do you think it's very hot today, or maybe very cold?
The heat can be oppressive, it can leave you listless and tired.
In Germany, however, we are very familiar with the freezing cold.
So you say to your counterpart, for example, "It's pretty hot today, isn't it?" or "It's pretty cold today, isn't it?"
Two words that go with it are "sweat" and "freeze".
You sweat when you're hot.
You freeze when you're cold.
Then we come to clouds and sun.
You can say: "A beautiful day, the sun is shining!" or "Nice weather today, isn't it?"
If the weather is bad and there are clouds, you simply say: "Too bad, it's cloudy."
And then we come to precipitation, so that's all the water that's coming out of the sky.
"It's been raining all day!" you can complain.
Or "It even snowed this morning!".
Dark clouds may also be gathering.
Then you say, "I'm afraid a thunderstorm is coming." or "Something's brewing".
I think that's a particularly beautiful expression.
"To brew something" is what you actually say when you're making beer.
When something is brewing, it is the great kitchen of heaven, so to speak, in which the dark clouds arise.
Maybe you'll say "A storm is brewing".
A storm is a powerful mixture of strong winds, often rain and thunderstorms.
In the weather report, which is shown on TV every evening, for example, and tells us what the weather will be like the next day, there are a few other factors.
For example, it is then about the humidity and the air pressure.
For example, I don't like it at all when the humidity in our house drops in winter.
The air becomes dry because the heater removes moisture from it.
That doesn't do me any good.
I can measure the air pressure with a barometer.
The wind speed is also measured with special instruments.
Incidentally, here in Bavaria we also have a very special weather phenomenon: the foehn.
This is a warm wind that comes to us over the Alps.
So sometimes we have very clear visibility and warm weather, although it looks very different a few hundred kilometers away.
The climate is of course different from the weather.
The weather is about a snapshot.
About what the sun and clouds are doing right now.
When it comes to the climate, we look at the major developments that take place over millennia and millions of years.
Germany is located in the cool-temperate climate zone.
We have both the maritime climate from Western Europe, i.e. the influence of the sea, and the continental climate from Eastern Europe.
Mild sea air from the Atlantic often comes to Germany from the west.
In the far west of the country, there are therefore not-so-cold winters.
The lowest confirmed temperature recorded in Germany was -37.8 degrees Celsius in Bavaria in 1929.
The highest temperature in 2019 in Lower Saxony with 42.6 degrees.
Here in Munich, i.e. in Bavaria, I can say that we have up to 30 degrees in summer and down to minus 15 in winter.
It rarely gets colder or warmer.

Wollen wir über das Wetter sprechen?
Ein bisschen Smalltalk?
Ja, dann machen wir das jetzt.
Angenommen, du triffst einen Menschen, den du noch nicht gut kennst.
Dann redest du mit ihm natürlich nicht über deine privatesten Träume und Wünsche, sondern eher über allgemeine Themen.
Sehr beliebt ist es, in dieser Situation über das Wetter zu sprechen.
Also tun wir das heute.
Zunächst einmal gibt es natürlich die Temperatur.
Findest du es sehr heiß heute, oder vielleicht auch sehr kalt?
Die Hitze kann drückend sein, sie kann dich antriebslos werden lassen und müde.
Klirrende Kälte kennen wir in Deutschland allerdings auch sehr gut.
Du sagst also zu deinem Gegenüber zum Beispiel "Ganz schön heiß heute, oder?" oder "Ganz schön kalt heute, oder?"
Zwei Worte, die dazu gehören, sind sweat und "frieren".
Du schwitzt, wenn dir heiß ist.
Du frierst, wenn dir kalt ist.
Dann kommen wir zu Wolken und Sonne.
Du kannst sagen: "Ein schöner Tag, die Sonne scheint!" oder "Schönes Wetter heute, oder?"
Bei schlechtem Wetter und Wolken sagst du einfach: "Schade, es ist cloudy
Und dann kommen wir zum Niederschlag, das ist also all das Wasser, das aus dem Himmel kommt.
"Es regnet schon den ganzen Tag!" kannst du dich beschweren.
Oder "Heute morgen hat es sogar geschneit!".
Vielleicht ziehen auch dunkle Wolken auf.
Dann sagst du "Ich fürchte ein Thunderstorm zieht auf." oder "Da braut sich was zusammen".
Das finde ich eine besonders schöne Redewendung.
"Etwas brauen" sagt man eigentlich, wenn man Bier herstellt.
Wenn sich etwas zusammenbraut, dann ist das sozusagen die große Himmelsküche, in der die dunklen Wolken entstehen.
Vielleicht sagst du dann auch "Ein Sturm zieht auf".
Ein Sturm ist ein gewaltiges Gemisch aus starkem Wind, oft Regen und auch Gewittern.
Beim Wetterbericht, der zum Beispiel jeden Abend im Fernsehen gezeigt wird und uns vorhersagt, wie das Wetter am nächsten Tag wird, gibt es noch einige andere Faktoren.
Zum Beispiel geht es dann um die Luftfeuchtigkeit und den Luftdruck.
Ich mag zum Beispiel gar nicht, wenn die Luftfeuchtigkeit in unserem Haus im Winter sinkt.
Die Luft wird trocken, weil die heating ihr die Feuchtigkeit entzieht.
Das tut mir gar nicht gut.
Den Luftdruck kann ich mit einem Barometer messen.
Auch die Windstärke wird mit speziellen Instrumenten gemessen.
Hier in Bayern haben wir übrigens noch ein ganz besonderes Wetterphänomen: Den Föhn.
Das ist ein warmer Wind, der über die Alpen zu uns kommt.
So haben wir manchmal sehr klare Sicht und warmes Wetter, obwohl es ein paar hundert Kilometer entfernt ganz anders aussieht.
Das Klima ist natürlich etwas anderes als das Wetter.
Beim Wetter geht es um eine Momentaufnahme.
Um das, was Sonne und Wolken gerade so machen.
Beim Klima schauen wir uns die großen Entwicklungen an, die gehen über Jahrtausende und Jahrmillionen.
Deutschland liegt in der kühlgemäßigten Klimazone.
Wir haben sowohl das maritime Klima aus Westeuropa, also den Influence des Meeres, als auch das kontinentale Klima aus Osteuropa.
Aus dem Westen kommt oft milde Meeresluft vom Atlantik nach Deutschland.
Ganz im Westen des Landes gibt es daher nicht so kalte Winter.
Die tiefste bestätigte in Deutschland gemessene Temperatur waren -37,8 Grad Celsius in Bayern im Jahr 1929.
Die höchste Temperatur 2019 in Niedersachsen mit 42,6 Grad.
Ich kann hier in München, also in Bayern, sagen, dass wir im Sommer bis zu 30 Grad haben und im Winter bis minus 15.
Kälter und wärmer wird es selten.
