The main anti-hero is the mistress. She lives alone, but with a bunch of maids and lackeys.
She is living through her last years. All her daughters have long grown up and married. Relatives do not visit our character.
Her whole life was not joyful, and now really dark days have come. The narrative also introduces us to Gerasim, a middle-aged man who grew up in the countryside.
From an early age, he stuck to the ground, he did not tolerate moving to the city well but seemed to be resigned to his position. Gerasim is a janitor and one of the best workers around.
Noble and deaf-mute. Everyone is afraid of him, starting from city thieves to other servants. But he never offends his colleagues, he lives in the den allotted to him.
The first year of Gerasim's stay was not marked by anything significant, but suddenly the mistress decided to marry her two serfs, the quiet laundress Tatiana and the alcoholic shoemaker Klimov.
She decides to do all this, relying on her power over the household, which, in fact, is unlimited. All simple manipulations the mistress entrusts to her butler - to bring the young people together and bring the matter to its logical end.
And here Gerasim is facing the main problem, for a year now, he likes Tatiana and he tries to show signs of attention to her, protects her from others, does not allow anyone to insult her. The serf is waiting for a decent new caftan to be sewn for him, in which he will go to a noble widow and ask for the right to marry a laundress.
The butler, who is entrusted with settling all issues, is worried, he knows that the mistress treats the deaf mute well, but because of his congenital illness, it is clear that he is no suitor.
The shoemaker tries not to show himself to Gerasim as he is afraid of the consequences. And the butler just hopes that the headstrong mistress will forget about her whim, but she constantly reminds and asks about how things are going with the wedding.
And then the butler comes up with how to resolve the situation. He remembered that Gerasim hated drunkards. Tania pretends to be drunk for the janitor.
The plan worked perfectly. Gerasim renounced his claims, and the laundress married Klimov. And a year later this story comes to a logical end, marriage does not help the shoemaker, he drank himself completely.
Even the mistress cannot stand it and exiles the alcoholic to the village with his wife. Gerasim gave Tatiana a handkerchief bought last year.
During the send-off in the middle of the journey, he decided to return back. On his way, he saw a dog drowning in the river, it was quite a puppy.
The deaf-mute saved it by pulling it out of the water, after which he takes care of the dog and calls it Mumu. The dog grew up noble and fine; a Spanish breed with huge intelligent eyes. Mumu caresses everyone but loves only her owner, to which Gerasim reciprocates.
The dog never barked in vain and guarded the yard, all the serfs also fell in love with Mumu. The tragedy broke out a year later, the widow, as usual, walked in her garden, teased everyone, and had fun. Such seizures were not uncommon, and everyone was afraid of them because something else was hidden behind friendliness and fun.
Each seizure ended in aggression and the worst mood. The mistress sees the dog, and, of course, she wants to play with it. She orders that it be brought to her, but Mumu only grins at her and even barks.
The mistress was upset, her good mood instantly disappeared. She returned to her chambers but at night, she could not sleep. In the morning she said that the reason for this was the barking of a dog, that Mumu must be got rid of as soon as possible.
The butler solves the problem simply - he sells the dog in the market. Gerasim begins to worry, he is looking everywhere for his pet, but the search did not bring any results, and after a couple of days Mumu returns on its own. It has a piece of rope around her neck.
Domestic servants told Gerasim that the dog was missing due to the whim of the mistress. They explained it with gestures. Realizing that this could become a problem, the janitor hides Mumu, but nothing helps - the dog barks at night.
The widow becomes hysterical and demands to get rid of the animal as soon as possible. And now the butler with gestures conveys the order to Gerasim to drown the dog. The man decided to do everything with his own hands. He took his best caftan, the same one that was sewn for engagement with Tatiana.
He fed Mumu in a tavern, and then sailed on a boat to the center of the river, tied bricks to its neck, and threw the dog overboard. We understand that such a decision was given to the hero with difficulty, this is especially evident from further actions.
Gerasim quickly collects his things and goes on foot to his native village. He arrived in a few days as if something was calling him home, drawing him to his homeland from distant lands.
The local headman is happy to welcome the returned worker because in the village he was considered the best. But the mistress does not stop looking for her janitor. Ultimately, she will find out where Gerasim is now.
At first, she is going to discharge him to Moscow, and then she decides that such ungrateful people do not deserve it. And Gerasim himself still lives in his dilapidated hut, he doesn't have a wife, and he does not keep dogs in the house.

Центральный антигерой — барыня. Живет она одна, но с кучей служанок и лакеев.
Она доживает свои последние годы. Все ее дочки уже давно выросли и вышли замуж. Родственники не посещают нашу героиню.
Вся её жизнь не была радостной, а сейчас настали действительно черные дни. Повествование знакомит нас и с Герасимом, — это мужик средних лет, выросший в деревне.
С малых лет он прикепел к земле, плохо перенес переезд в город, но вроде бы смирился со своим положением. Герасим — дворник и один из лучших работников.
Статный и deaf-mute Его боятся все, начиная городскими ворами и заканчивая другими слугами. Но своих коллег он никогда не обижает, живёт в отведенной ему каморке.
Первый год пребывания Герасима ничем значительным не ознаменовался, но внезапно барыня решила поженить двух своих крепостных, тихую прачку Татьяну и башмачника-алкоголика Климова.
Все это она решает сделать, опираясь на свою власть над домашними, которая по сути, безгранична. Все нехитрые манипуляции барыня доверяет дворецкому, — свести молодых и довести дело до логичного конца.
И здесь Герасим сталкивается с главной проблемой, уже год, как ему нравится Татьяна и он пытается проявить к ней знаки внимания, защищает от окружающих, не допускает оскорблений в ее сторону. Serf ждет, когда же ему сошьют новый приличный кафтан, в нем он пойдет к знатной вдове и попросит права жениться на прачке.
Дворецкий, которому поручено уладить все вопросы, беспокоится, он знает, что барыня неплохо относится к глухонемому, но из-за его врожденной болезни понятно, что жених из него никакой.
Башмачник пытается не показываться на глаза Герасиму, боится расправы. А дворецкий просто надеется, что своевольная барышня забудет о своем капризе, но она постоянно напоминает и спрашивает о том, как продвигаются дела со свадьбой.
И тут дворецкий придумывает, как разрешить ситуацию. Он вспомнил, что Герасим ненавидит пьяных. Таня делает вид, будто она выпила и показывается в таком виде на глаза дворнику.
План сработал идеально. Герасим отказался от своих притязаний, а прачка вышла замуж за Климова. И через год эта история приходит к логическому концу, женитьба никак не помогает башмачнику, он окончательно спился.
Даже барыня не может это терпеть и ссылает алкоголика в деревню вместе с женой. Герасим подарил Татьяне, купленный еще в прошлом году платок.
Во время проводов на середине пути он решил вернуться обратно. По пути увидел, как в реке тонет собака, совсем щенок.
deaf-mute спас ее, вытащив из воды, после чего он выхаживает собаку и называет ее Муму. Собачка выросла статной и ладной, испанской породы с огромными умными глазами. Муму ластится ко всем, но любит одного только хозяина, на что Герасим отвечает ей взаимностью.
Собака никогда не лаяла понапрасну, и сторожила двор, все домашние тоже полюбили Муму. Трагедия разразилась еще через год, вдова, как обычно, гуляла по своему саду, всех подначивала и веселилась. Такие припадки были не редкостью, и все их боялись, ведь за friendliness и весельем скрывалось нечто иное.
Каждый припадок заканчивался агрессией и самым плохим расположением духа. Барыня видит собачку, и, конечно же, ей хочется поиграться. Она приказывает привести ту к себе, но Муму лишь скалится на нее и даже лает.
Хозяйка огорчилась, ее хорошее настроение вмиг улетучилось. Вернулась в свои покои но ночью, так и не смогла уснуть. Поутру сказала, что причина тому собачий лай, что от Муму необходимо избавиться как можно быстрее.
Дворецкий решает проблему просто — продает собачонку на рынке. Герасим начинает волноваться, повсюду ищет свою питомицу, но поиски не принесли никаких результатов, а через пару дней Муму возвращается самостоятельно. На шее у нее обрывок от веревки.
Домашние слуги рассказали Герасиму, что собака пропадала из-за прихоти барыни. Они объяснили это жестами. Понимая, что это может стать проблемой, дворник прячет Муму, но ничего не помогает — собака лает по ночам.
Вдова впадает в истерику и требует как можно быстрее избавиться от животного. И теперь уже дворецкий жестами передает приказ Герасиму утопить собаку. Мужик решил сделать всё своими руками. Взял свой лучший кафтан, тот самый, что шили для помолвки с Татьяной.
Накормил Муму в трактире, а потом на лодке выплыл на центр реки, привязал кирпичи к шее, выкинул собаку за борт. Мы понимаем, что такое solution далось герою с трудом, особенно это видно из дальнейших поступков.
Герасим быстро собирает свои вещи и отправляется пешком в родную деревню. Добрался за несколько дней, как будто что-то зазывало его домой, тянуло на родину из далеких краев.
Местный староста с радостью принимает вернувшегося работника, ведь в деревне он считался лучшим. А вот барыня не перестает искать своего дворника. В конечном счете она узнает, где сейчас Герасим.
Сначала собирается выписать его в Москву, а потом решает, что такие неблагодарные люди этого не заслуживают. А сам Герасим так и живет в своей ветхой избушке, жены он не завел, да и собак в доме не держит.
